Summary

  • 1st video: The video was about time signatures and why they are important in the music world. Time signatures show a number of beats per measure. The bottom number shows the type of note that gets the beat. The top number shows how many beats in a measure. They show music scores with the different time signatures and shows them in more detail. Further, into the video, they talk about 2 over 4,  3 over 2 and 6 over 8.
  • 2nd video: The video was about- "is there really a difference between the time signatures 3/4 and 6/8". In the beginning, he talks about in 6/8 we count to 6 and in 3/4 we also count to 6. Which is confusing because does that mean they are the same. Not so much just because musicians count a similar way doesn't mean its written and played the same way. Further, into the video, he plays a little rhythm on the drum for the time signature 3/4 and 6/8 to show they are not the same. He gives us songs to help us feel the rhythm for both the time signatures. In the end, he talks about how 6/4 relates to 3/4. A composer might choose to make his 3/4 piece a 6/4 piece by removing the bar lines which makes the measures longer. Finally, he shows an example of the time signature 6/8.

Reflection
Our first unit in music was called “back to fundamentals”. During the unit, we learned about treble clef and bass clef and the basics of music. During the unit, I learned a lot about treble clef. Some of the things I learned are, the treble clef is also called G clef because when you look at the treble clef symbol the line lands on the second line which is the note G. I also learned how to memorize the notes in treble clef. During this unit, I also learned a lot about bass clef. Some of the things I learned are, the treble clef is also called F clef because when you look at the bass clef symbol the two dots look like their guarding one line which is the note F. I also learned how to memorize the notes in bass clef. We also learned about the beat and the rhythm. The beat is the steady pulse that you feel in the tune, like a metronome or clock. It's what you would clap along to or tap your foot to. The rhythm is the actual sound of the notes, E.g in a song the rhythm would be the same as the words. During this unit, we created a music composition. Personally, it wasn't challenging because I've been doing piano for over 3 years so I know the basics and how to count and create a piece of music. I used ATLs when I performed my music composition I communicated with my peers through my piece because they clapped back the exact same beat. I used my self-management skills when I created my composition because I spent my time wisely when in the process. I was a thinker when I created a piece cause I used the knowledge I already have when it comes to counting and composing and thought if it made sense. I used my collaboration skills when we worked as groups and pairs throughout the unit. I think I need to improve on memorizing where the notes go on the stave.

16 measures on Noteflight

 Term 1 Reflection
This unit we have focused on the fundamentals of music and how to create a composition or melody. I have developed my sight reading skills throughout this unit. I've improved my sight reading skills during the few lessons and assignments we had on notes in bass clef and treble clef. The assignment that was beneficial and helpful was when we created sentences for the notes that are used throughout Bass clef and Treble clef. One of my sentences/strategies that I created through the process is All Caterpillars Eat Green. I think I got better due to the amount of effort I put practicing and studying.I have learned how many beats a note can consist due to what note it is (whole note, quarter note etc). This benefitted me when I designed and created my composition because I knew how many beats should be in each measure due to the time signature. Another music fundamental I have learned is where each note is. This helped me during the process of creating my composition because it was easy for me to play on the piano.I think I need to improve keeping the rhythm and the beat because I tend to go too fast or too slow through a music piece. I can improve keeping the rhythm and beat by practicing and using a metronome. The specific target I want to set for myself to improve is using a metronome every time I practice no matter what and to practice more whenever I have free time. I've actually started to use a metronome when I practice which is good because I have already started to reach my goal/target.Ways that helped me through the process of creating my composition would be my prior knowledge and understanding of music. I have just started theory for the piano recently but I do have some prior knowledge but I have done piano for over 3 years which helped me understand a bit more than others. Another way that helped me was my ability to read the notes and play them on the piano. Through the process of creating our composition, we had to practice it on the piano and read the notes and clap them which was easy for me because I already knew what I was doing which impacted my composition positively.

MUSIC TERM 2

Instruments of the Orchestra Project

My group researched the Woodwind family.
I was responsible for researching the Oboe instrument. Sufian was responsible for researching the Clarinet instrument, Mustafa was responsible for researching the Saxophone instrument, Sultan was responsible for researching the Flute instrument and Konrad was responsible for researching the Piccolo instrument.

Instruments of the Orchestra lesson
(Brainstorm)

What: We will give them an object and they have to describe it using the instruments of the orchestra. They will, later on, create a piece then play it on the keyboard using they different soundtracks (e.g. Object: Star and Instrument: violin, piano xylophone, etc)

Who: All ages and levels

Why: It will help them express themselves through music and helps them learn about the instruments of the orchestra.

Resources: Keyboard, paper, and students

STEPS:
  1. Introduction: We will show them the instruments and let them listen to the sound it produces
  2. Game: We will explain to them the game
  3. We will give each one of them an object (e.g. cow, star, sun, etc)
  4. They will choose up to three instruments to use as a description for the objects (e.g. star: Violin, flute, xylophone)
  5. They will create a 4 measure piece describing the objects ( 4 BEATS PER MEASURE)
  6. Using the keyboard they will, later on, play their pieces using the different soundtracks given to you on the keyboard (e.g. soundtracks: Violin-34, Flute-65)
E.g.

Object: River
Instruments: Violin, viola, kettledrum
Soundtracks: Strings: 34 Drums:134
Piece:

  1. Thank you for completing the assignment. The sentences you created for the bass clef are ....interesting.
However the assignment was: "Students must ALSO research the Bass Clef Staff and give ways of helping someone understand and memorize the lines and spaces of the BASS Clef (images can also be added). Please give credit to any and all research done to accomplish the Bass Clef staff section of this task."
You did not give examples of how you can help someone understand and memorize the Bass Clef. You just gave 2 sentences. You would need to explain that in more detail.
Also, you did not reference where you got this information from.
In order to get higher marks, always read and answer the directions/questions thoroughly.

  2. Noor,
Is this YOUR work? This is 3 parts and includes other things besides notes. I know I said that if you know music you can do extra but is this really your work?

  3. 4 measures:
Success: You completed the task with 4 beats in 4 measures. You even included bass clef and repeat signs.
    Criterion A: 8
    Criterion C: 8

  4. 16 measures:
Success: You completed the task with 4 beats in 16 measures.
Improvement: You could have also used eighth rests within your composition for higher creativity points.

    Criterion C: 6

  5. Noor,
Where is your composition with the counts? Where is your reflection?

    1. I found your counts. However, I need to see that you can subdivide. So I need to see "1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and". Not just 1, 2, 3, 4.

  6. Reflection:
WWW: You wrote in complete sentences. You also told me which ATLs you feel you have used during this unit. It was great how you put beat/rhythm into your own words!
